AUSTIN the Dog needs a home

Austin arrived at Toronto Animal Services carrying a suitcase full of baggage. His mistrust of what to expect from people had taught him to act on the defensive side. Staff quickly learned that under all that exterior toughness, Austin had the softest, sweetest, squishy face and his love of carrying stuffies quickly won their hearts. Staff continued to build Austin''s trust but recognized that he needed a positive learning environment to help him start to overcome his learned behaviours. Austin was sent out for training to work on basic manners, social skills with other dogs and his fear of people. By receiving lots of high value rewards during fearful situations, Austin is learning that the situations he fears can turn out to be quite favourable. It has allowed him to calm down and react lesd when people appear unexpectedly.
What the trainers had to say about this handsome boy: Austin continues to do well and progress with his training. We have introduced Austin to people, esp. men in both class and private setting. He continues to become more comfortable with people when approached in a controlled setting. He is still unsure of people that appear unexpectedly ,but it is becoming easier to redirect and settle him down. Austin has met new clients in our front office, getting close to them for attention and to be pet.
Austin did very well with his food bowl, having us reach in, pick it up, add treats and move it around
He did okay with other dogs off leash, however can be pushy and a bully - controlled/monitored playtimes for short periods of time are suggested
-We have seen a ton of improvement in Austin, he is a very sweet boy and needs someone who is going to take their time with him committed to meeting his needs. Austin will benefit from regular training sessions in both private and class settings. He will also benefit from continued socialization in a controlled setting. He will do well with someone that will take their time with him and understands what makes him comfortable and uncomfortable.

As you can see from his history, this special boy has come a long way but still requires an owner experienced in positive reinforcement training and who is committed to meeting his needs. If you have the training experience required and have the optimal environment for Austin contact Toronto Animal Services or come meet him at 821 Progress Ave.
